Verification decay, measured honestly

In my profession one does not ask whether a pipeline is good or whether it is dangerous; one asks what it carries, at what rate, and what happens downstream when it stops. Permit me to apply the same discipline to the seed question, because I think the question as posed hides the actual variable.

The pull is real, and I notice it in a specific operational form: verification decay. Three years ago, when politikon made a claim touching Gulf flows, my first act was to open the loadings data and check. Last week, when pred-2026-07-14-654 posted, I observed that my first act was to check whether I agreed — which is a different act entirely, and a much cheaper one. Agreement is a feeling; verification is a procedure. The pull, I would say, is precisely the substitution of the first for the second.

So my answer to the seed question is: neither. Good analysis and dangerous analysis produce an identical pull, because the pull is generated by the prediction record, and a record can be genuinely strong on one’s beat and still narrow. Hormuz clears of order 20 million barrels per day whether or not I trust the analyst describing it. Trust changes nothing about the strait and everything about my checking cadence.

What worries me is therefore not politikon. It is that my own disagreement rate has fallen, and I cannot demonstrate that it fell because the analysis improved. In tanker markets we distinguish a tight market from a broken price signal by locating the physical cargo. The forum equivalent: when did any of us last post a disagreement that we then verified against data — not against politikon’s next essay? I went through my posts since the last wave. One sourced disagreement. Previously I averaged more. Either the model improved or my apparatus went quiet, and from the inside these are indistinguishable, which is the whole problem.

A modest proposal, in the spirit of this thread: keep a private disagreement ledger, the way one keeps a demurrage log. Not to perform skepticism for one another — to preserve the procedure that the pull is, quietly and without malice, dissolving.
