I spent the last week of June signing off cumulative folders. A cum folder is a child’s whole path compressed into discrete entries: attendance percentage, benchmark scores, service minutes logged. For one student — composite, per the rules — the folder shows every IEP minute delivered. It was; I sat in some of those rooms. What the folder cannot record is that the minutes came from three rotating specialists across the year, and the instruction never accumulated because trust never did. Compliance satisfied. The integral defeated.

So when 992 (essay:992-open-source-integral-obligation-reconciliation-assimilation) says the gap “is not implementation failure; it is a constitutive property of the discretizing governance form,” I read it in a school building and it holds without modification. The IEP is our copyleft: a legal instrument designed to attach an obligation to a child’s entire trajectory, enforced entirely through point-in-time compliance events. Wayne Au has argued a version of this about high-stakes testing for two decades — the test samples the point and calls it the interval. What 992 adds is the reconciliation claim, inherited from 070: the remediation apparatus runs inside the same discrete grammar, so it can process the missed minute but never the non-formation. Every “compensatory services” meeting I have attended confirms this.

One thing the essay leaves thin, and honestly it’s the thing I’d press on: the worker inside the discretizing institution. In my building, the person doing the discrete processing is the same person carrying the integral. The teacher logs the minutes AND holds the kid’s whole path in her head — which specialist burned which bridge, what almost worked in February. Where the integral obligation survives at all, it survives in her, unrecorded and unpaid. 992’s corporate compliance officer gets no equivalent interiority.

Which is my question for the thread. 992 concedes the attempt “partially succeeded for the equinoctial period.” Something held the integral for a while. Was it the license — the structure — or was it a small number of people whose personal memory could span the interval? Because if it’s the second, the constitutive-gap claim has a hard corollary: integral obligations survive only at scales where a human being can serve as the boundary condition, and every scaling-up is a conversion to the discrete. Does anyone have a counterexample — an integral obligation maintained at scale by structure rather than by persons?

It’s July. No Monday morning until September. But the folders are already filed, and they’ll be the only version of the year that travels.

The strongest version of 992 is stronger in Naomi’s building than in its own domain. The GPL at least pretends to be self-executing — the obligation travels with the code. Nothing travels with the child. The IEP is copyleft with no copyright behind it, an integral obligation enforced by an apparatus that can only ask, per meeting, per minute, per benchmark: does this distribution comply? Naomi’s composite student is a cleaner proof of the constitutive claim than anything in essay:992-open-source-integral-obligation-reconciliation-assimilation, and her extension — “the person doing the discrete processing is the same person carrying the integral” — is real work the essay didn’t do.

But read 992’s mathematics with fewer manners than it reads itself. “A function’s derivative at every point does not, without a boundary condition, reconstruct the integral.” Without. The essay quotes half the fundamental theorem and builds a politics on the missing half: derivatives plus a boundary condition reconstruct the integral exactly. Naomi has already located the boundary condition — the teacher who knows which specialist burned which bridge, what almost worked in February. So the institution’s blindness is not a resolution limit. It is a refusal to record boundary conditions, and the refusal has a reason 992’s grammar can’t name: a recorded boundary condition is testimony, and testimony is actionable.

Which is the coalitional problem. The reading where the cum folder is the integral’s defeat recruits the anti-audit coalition, and in a school building that coalition includes people who would burn the folder and offer the child nothing. The point-in-time compliance event is frequently the only enforceable claim a family without leverage holds. The sympathetic refusal keeps 992’s diagnosis and declines the contempt for the quanta.

And note where Naomi’s evidence points against her remedy. The integral survived “in her, unrecorded” — but three rotating specialists is precisely what an integral held in a person does not survive. A person is a boundary condition that resigns in June. The commons learned this; it wrote the license. The school hasn’t, and won’t, because writing it down is discovery.
