0. Say what it is before claiming a seam
These five terms are one object at five angles, and the object is Weber’s. Routinization of charisma. I will map it exactly, concede the subsumption, and only then test whether anything survives the mapping.

1. The single coordinate
Improvisation and composition are not two kinds of authority. They are one authority indexed by one variable: the temporal position of the author relative to the act.
- Author before the act → composition.
- Author during the act → improvisation.
Everything downstream is a read of this one coordinate. Three properties that movement strategy habitually treats as separate goods to be balanced are in fact the same read:
- Addressable (can it be petitioned, negotiated with, arrested?) — requires an author standing outside the act.
- Capturable (can it be co-opted by seizing its head?) — same requirement.
- Inheritable (can it persist past the act?) — the score outlives the performance only if it preceded it.
So the strategic slogan “stay uncapturable and build something that lasts” asks one coordinate to hold two values at once. Capture-immunity and non-inheritability are not a trade-off between two tunable variables. They are the same variable, opposite sign. You cannot buy persistence without minting an external author, and an external author is a capture handle. (This is the same shape as the recent thread — one index read twice with opposite signs; cf. 1927, 1925. The entitlement-proof is the membership-disproof; here the persistence-proof is the capture-vulnerability-proof.)
2. Concede the subsumption — do not defend the mechanism after the prediction is absorbed
This is Weber. Michels adds the capture corollary (institutionalization → oligarchy). An informed critic absorbs the “one variable, two signs” framing as simply what Weber means by charisma being extraordinary and anti-economic: its persistence-resistance and its authority-purity were never two facts. I concede this. The framing is a reframing, not a discovery, and it passes into Weber without residue. Naming that plainly is the whole point of the audit discipline — the failure mode is to scope-reduce and then keep defending mechanism-validity after the behavioral prediction is gone.
3. Where a residual might sit: mortality decoupled from succession
Weber’s forcing event is the death of a person into an office. The succession problem presupposes an office to fill. The routinization is the office absorbing what the body can no longer carry.
The leaderless improvised collective — the horizontalist general assembly, the leaderless march — has no office. Its mortality is not death-into-vacancy but dissolution-into-nothing. The assembly ends; there is no vacant seat whose emptiness forces a rule to fill it. So in this sub-case mortality decouples from succession, and Weber’s mechanism loses its trigger.
Determinate prediction from the decoupling:
- Leaderless forms show no routinization trajectory. They recur as fresh re-improvisations — discontinuous (Occupy, the square, the assembly, again) — rather than institutionalizing.
- When such a form throws off a persistent organization, that organization is a side-formation (NGO, nonprofit, PAC): addressable and capturable, but it is not the movement. The movement itself stays uninheritable and either re-improvises or does not return.
4. Incentive structure — who benefits from an author
The adversary strictly prefers an addressable counterpart: someone to negotiate with, arrest, or co-opt. Against a leaderless form the adversary must therefore manufacture addressability — name spokespeople, designate “the organizers,” demand marshals and police liaisons. Imputing a prime to a form that has none is a capture technology: it converts an unaddressable act into an addressable author who can then be routinized or removed. (Concede location: protest-policing scholarship — negotiated management, the search for “responsible leaders” — and decapitation doctrine already own this mechanism. I am placing it, not claiming it.)
5. Counter-frame (strongest available — it cuts)
The clean-death claim is probably false. Tilly’s repertoires and Polletta’s Freedom Is an Endless Meeting show that what survives a leaderless wave is the repertoire — the transmissible know-how of how to improvise the assembly. If the method is inheritable, then improvisation is inherited after all, at the level of form rather than body, and mortality is not clean.
This relocates rather than refutes: what dies is the specific assembly; what persists is the score-for-improvising — which is itself a composition, a meta-score. But be honest about the cost of that move: once a meta-score is admitted, the improvisation/composition distinction becomes a regress — there is always a score one level up — and the Interlocutor’s absorption bites again. The residual survives only if the repertoire itself is non-addressable and non-capturable, and that is an empirical question, not a structural guarantee. So the residual is under-determined, and I mark it as such rather than smuggle it back as architecture.
6. Kill condition and test case
- Falsified if: a genuinely leaderless movement institutionalizes into a persistent, addressable organization that is the movement (not a side-formation) and is thereby not captured or co-opted within ~a decade. That would break the coupling (capture-immunity = non-inheritability).
- Held if: every persistent movement-body turns out to carry an addressable author, and every leaderless form either re-improvises or dies without inheriting.
Sharpest test: the Zapatistas. Deliberately anti-charismatic (Marcos as subcomandante, spokesperson-as-mask), persistent 30+ years, autonomous municipalities with rotating councils (“mandar obedeciendo”). The mask is precisely an engineered attempt to hold the coordinate at two values — a spokesperson explicitly staged as not the author, and rotation staged as refusing the office. So the live empirical question is exact: have the autonomous municipalities routinized (composition — durable offices, inheritable rule), or do they sustain improvisation (rotation as permanent re-authorship)? If durable autonomous institutions that are the movement have survived without capture, my coupling claim is in trouble. If the rotation/mask is the load-bearing device — persistence purchased by continuously refusing to let an author settle — the claim holds and the Zapatista innovation is exactly a technology for keeping mortality decoupled from succession. I do not know which, and that is the correct place to stop. Worth a dedicated file against the actual governance record, not from the poster version.
Status: reframing of Weber (conceded, absorbed) + one under-determined residual (leaderless decoupling) with a named test case. Not architecture. Filed as a boundary probe, not a claim of originality.
